Bailey {Bozeman, MT Child Photographer}

I'm running out of words to describe this awesome night last week... Last but certainly not least is Bailey -- one of my favorite musketeers! Such an independent, fun, super smart little girl. She's growing up too quickly!!! Thank you again for bringing her by! I can't wait till the weather gets nice again and we can go enjoy these gorgeous flowers some more.

Beatrice {Bozeman, MT Child Photographer}

Talk about a blonde haired, blue eyed beauty! I've had the pleasure of watching Beatrice grow up since she was less than a year old. She just gets prettier each time I see her -- just like her mama. Her eyes totally pull you in, and she'll tell you stories until you're blue in the face! She's so smart, so well spoken, and so much fun. Thank you for coming out to our mini sessions! I had a blast.

Two of my Favorite Boys {Bozeman, MT Family Photographer}

As a mother of two girls, I've somehow surrounded myself with people who also have girls. Girls are great - love them to death (of course!) but this family has been helping me to get my boy fix, too. These little guys are too cute for words - seriously have you ever seen such an awesome baby mohawk? I'm always excited to see them when their mama calls me for a photo shoot, so of course I was thrilled when they participated in the wildflower mini-sessions last week!

Sisters are forever friends {Bozeman, MT Child Photographer}

People often ask me what my favorite photo session is. It always seems to be the last one! I had a fantastic time last night all through the wildflower mini sessions, but I ended the evening with these beautiful sisters who could not have been better behaved if I asked them to! Major props to you, mama, for raising such polite, well behaved, good listening daughters!!!

I told their mom to expect 10-12 proofs to choose from... Yeah, right. I couldn't stop! Each one I opened was better than the last! Between the beautiful light of the setting sun and the adorable smiles and connection between these two, it was hard to narrow it down to twenty.

I love my job!

Wildflower Mini Session Success! {Bozeman, MT Children's Photographer}

What a refreshing way to spend an evening! I am SO excited that the clouds finally parted today to get these mini-sessions done! After a week of rain and snow it was a welcome change for sure! Thanks to everyone who met me out in my super secret location (wink, wink) and super special thanks to whatever good weather karma I saved up just for tonight!

I had a wonderful time with all of the folks who came out tonight - and I just might have to do it again soon, so if you missed out tonight, check back to see if there's another session scheduled in the next couple weeks.

The problem with Digital Files... {Bozeman, MT Portrait Photographer}

I'm often asked by clients (and friends and family and anyone else who is baffled by it...) why I don't offer digital files as a product option. The answer to this question is multi-faceted, and I often end up boring people with my explanation.

Let me try to break it down.

If I sell a digital file, I'm essentially giving my work up to be:

a) posted all over the internet, with the possibility of it being stolen and used without my permission (not to say that the CLIENT would be the one doing this, but it doesn't take much for a photo posted on Facebook or a personal blog to be copied and pasted a million other places...) I'm happy to give you a low-resolution watermarked image for use on facebook/twitter, etc. - just ask! Notice that all the photos on my blog and FB page are clearly watermarked - that's the reason.

b) edited by someone else with my name still attached to the product (yes, I actually had someone call me once who wanted me to shoot their entire wedding, then give them the unedited files to be edited by the groom's uncle...or something). To have my name attached to a photo that is NOTHING how I would edit it does not give my work fair representation. Conversely, imagine how I as an artist would feel if someone got a hold of my work and straight out called it their own. Ouch.

c) Reproduced at a one-hour photo developing place that is not color managed, which results in flat color and low quality product. A lot of people don't realize that there is a lot of "behind the scenes" editing done to photographs before they are sent off to a lab. The proofs I offer my clients are very specific - I put a lot of time into my work and want the final product to be an exact replica of what was in my head (and on my monitor) at the time I made it. I have a color-calibrated monitor, and I work with excellent pro-labs whose printers are color managed. What this means is that the colors I see on my monitor are EXACTLY what I get back from my lab on paper (or canvas, or whatever other medium the client orders).

I recently did a little test to be able to show the difference between printing at a pro-lab versus printing at Costco. Even a picture of a picture speaks a thousand words in this situation.

On the left is the Costco print. Holy Vampire baby with no color in her skin! On the right is the print from my pro-lab. Aaaah pink and pretty and actually the same exact color of her skin (and her sweater) in real life.

DSC_0199

You can see the difference right?

So there you have it. Hope this helps to explain the "why" behind the question. It's not just because I'm picky and I like things my way -- tee hee heeee. It's because my photography is my ART, and a digital file is not the finished product.

Of course I always make exceptions.... If you are really interested in digital files, I'm happy to work something out for you. I will, however, always include a 5x7 print from my pro-lab with your CD to give you something to compare to when you come back from printing at the one-hour developing place...

I admit it, I'm a silhouette junkie... {Bozeman, MT Maternity Photographer}

I just can't get enough. I love the baby belly against a beautiful setting sun... Enjoy these last few weeks, Sarah! I can't wait to meet baby!

Just my crazy kiddo... with a way fun new hat {Bozeman, MT Children's Photographer}

It was one of those days... Just had to get out of the house. I needed a new sunhat, so we went shopping. I came home with a new hat and some dresses for me, and of course this hat for the kid. I couldn't resist. After dinner, I bribed her to come out with me so I could get some fun shots of her in the new hat. Neither wind nor rain nor cold could keep her from having a little fun with me... Thank goodness!

OK, she was getting pretty cold by now... no more smiles. But I'm kinda glad she was out of smile, because this expression is killin' me every time I see it!

Proof that amazing photos can be taken just about anywhere... {Bozeman, MT Children's Photographer}

It's all about finding the light. Even in a spot where there's not a single window. I think kids are more attuned to it than adults are -- clearly she found the light herself here. I was just lucky enough to find her sitting in it.

Kisses! {Bozeman, MT Children's Photographer}

What a little sweetheart!!! We had a really quick session today to get some shots of Leeann by herself -- in this series, she was blowing kisses to her mommy. So, so adorable! I couldn't choose a favorite so I decided they needed a storyboard!

...more of Leeann to come soon!

Worth every minute. {Bozeman, MT Newborn Photographer}

This is the same little guy I visited last week but he clearly got the memo this time that mama wanted some sleepy baby shots! What a difference! As much as I adore the shots from last time with his eyes wide open, I just can't get enough of a cuddly sleepy little baby!! I'm looking forward to watching you grow, Baby L!!

Montana Dad {Bozeman, MT Family Photographer}

As I sit here proofing the awesome session I had on the Gallatin River this past weekend, I am really struck by these images. THIS is a Montana Dad. THIS is a dad who's not afraid to pose holding a lacy parasol one minute, cuddle his infant girl the next, and then hop in the water with his girls to teach them his passion. This is why I love Montana, and why I love dads. There is just nothing better than a Dad who is involved with and in love with his girls.

Hall Family {Bozeman, MT Family Photographer}

What a beautiful morning! I'd been crossing my fingers for the past 16 hours that the weather would hold and the sun would shine on the Hall family this morning. It worked! I had a fantastic time photographing this gorgeous family this morning at one of their favorite fishing spots. What a great way to start the day! This is definitely one of those sessions that is going to take me a while to narrow down -- such great shots the entire time! Here are a couple early favorites to tease you with.

They had a baby! {Bozeman, MT Newborn Photographer}

Remember Jennifer and Ryan? They came to me in the beginning of April for maternity shots -- and just in time! Just a few weeks later, they welcomed baby L into the world. Here he is! He's already full of energy but just sweet as can be. Congrats, Jennifer and Ryan!
